“THIS IS going to be so fun!” Staci said, hopping and skipping a few feet in front of Simon and Barbara. “Simon, we’re going up the mountain!”

“I know, I know.” He couldn’t stop grinning, thrilled to have this experience with his family.

“You’ve already been.” She turned around and stopping long enough to put her hands on her hips. “But this is a different mountain, and this time you’ll be with us, and that’s awesome too!”

“It totally is,” Simon said.

Taking him as sincere, Staci turned around and started skipping again. Barbara laughed fondly.

Staci had been a little put out when she heard about Simon’s hike to the top of the mountain because apparently she wanted to go with him too. Placated when she found out it was in Lake Louise, but he’d never been to Banff before, the three of them decided on a Sunday outing so Barbara and Staci could show him around.

So far they’d gone for a walk through town to browse the many shops, found a cute little rooftop restaurant to have lunch, and walked by the large Fairmont Hotel to take pictures. It looked like a castle nestled in the middle of the Canadian Rockies and was as beautiful as the chateau at Lake Louise.

Now they were going to go up the side of a mountain in a gondola. It looked like a large chairlift, but instead of benches, the gondolas were enclosed cabins that sat four people. Definitely a first for Simon.

“Look.” Staci pointed at a hiking trail that started near the gondola facilities. “We can walk up there if we want. I want to walk up a mountain like Simon!”

Barbara and Simon exchanged a worried glance. Though not as long a trail as the one Simon had done the week before, it was a lot steeper, and the incline would be a tremendous amount of work. Barbara blanched as her eyes followed the path up, up, up the mountainside.

“I don’t know about that,” Simon said gently. He made a face and patted his backside. “I’m still recovering from the last mountain I climbed. I don’t think I’ll be able to do another one so soon! Not one this hard.”

“It’s just because you’re old, Uncle Simon,” Staci said.

Simon placed a hand over his heart, making a wounded noise. “I’m not old!”

“I am,” Barbara said, looking a lot more relaxed. “Staci, honey, let’s make plans to do another walk before the end of the summer. We’ll find a good one for sure, and we’ll all go again.”

“There’s Johnston Canyon,” Simon said. “My friend Benji told me about it. We’ll be able to walk to waterfalls. Two different sets of them!” And it was more of a horizontal trail than a vertical one, according to Benji, which would be easier on all of them.

“That sounds lovely.” Barbara sounded relieved. She patted Simon’s arm gratefully. “We’ll have a lot of fun.”

“Waterfalls!” Staci punched her fist into the air. “I love those.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Simon said.

“And this way we can still go up on a gondola,” Barbara pointed out.
